The guys we love to hate...and sometimes hate to love, but nevertheless a necessity for their universe to survive.
What’s the point of a hero (a ‘protagonist’, if you prefer using longer words), if there’s no villain that he (or she) has to fight against, and defend their friends from?
Apart from their powers or abilities, it’s the awesome (and dare I say, badass) things they say that gives villains their character.
Which is why I decided to collate a list of 7 tv villain quotes that fit the escape room environment.
Why TV villains in particular?
Two reasons.
One, I’ve blogged about Gibbs’ rules that escape room fans will appreciate.
Gibbs, as in Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the (as of November 2021, retired) hero of the TV series NCIS.
Blogging about TV villains’ quotes is a nice way to balance out that post, don’t you think?
Two, I’ve long felt TV villains don’t get the kind of attention their big screen counterparts get.
I mean, have you obsessed as much about Savitar (from Flash) as you have about Thanos?
Consider this my effort to give TV villains a fair shake.

The TV series: Sherlock, the UK TV series.
How it fits the escape room environment
Isn’t it obvious?
If you have an excellent memory, you’ll be able to recall every possible clue you’ve spotted since entering the room, and find the way forward faster than if you had to stop and look back.
A great memory can also help you remember all the different escape rooms you’ve done, so you can spot similar puzzles, challenges and tasks, should they come up in your next escape room.
If you’d like to see how good your memory is, and whether you can scare your friends by telling them you have an excellent memory - like Magnussen does - you can try escaping a serial killer!

The villain: Red John.
The TV series: The Mentalist.
The identity of Red John is the central plot line of the first few seasons of The Mentalist; there are many red herrings along the way.
I didn’t want to spoil the suspense for you if you haven’t seen the series yet, that’s why I only showed his calling card - a smiley face drawn with his victim’s blood (he’s a serial killer) - here.
How it fits the escape room environment
It’s the perfect thing to say when your escape game begins, isn’t it?
Ask your team members whether they’ve spotted any leads on how to proceed.
The best part - if you say it first, it sets you out as the person taking charge of the event: the team leader.

The villain: Skeletor.
The TV series: He Man And The Masters Of The Universe.
Yes, this is an animated series. No, it isn’t exactly recent.
But all said and done, do any of those facts lower the...awesomeness of the quote?
How it fits the escape room environment
It’s a great line for when a new team is being briefed for their escape game, isn’t it?
That’s a standard component of many escape game storylines - fail your mission, and something terrible will happen.
FYI...That is all make-believe. Our escape games - like almost every other escape game out there - are safe and secure experience.

The villain: Tywin Lannister.
The TV series: Game Of Thrones.
He’s referring to an upcoming war - War of the Five Kings - in which he feels he’ll be able to craft a legacy.
How it fits the escape room environment
You can have birthday parties at escape rooms. Did you know that?
The games themselves are a great way for everyone to engage with each other, plus we may be able to arrange for some snacks and a cake if you want.
Or we’ll be happy to point you towards nearby food and drink establishments for that part of the party.
And escape room birthday parties tend to be a hit...and the one who organizes it shall be remembered for the great party they threw!
Wouldn’t you like to spend your birthday leading your friends on a mission in a top secret bunker?

The villain: Gustav “Gus” Fring.
The TV series: Breaking Bad.
Apart from escape rooms, this is pretty good advice in general. You’d do well to heed it.
How it fits the escape room environment
You have to have a quick learning curve in an escape room game.
Learn from your mistakes, and don’t repeat them. Otherwise you’ll end up wasting valuable time.

The TV series: House of Cards.
House of Cards is a rather unique TV show in that its main character is also its antagonist (“villain” is too crude when referring to Frank Underwood).
And that the antagonist keeps winning.
How it fits the escape room environment
Reading the fine print, reading between the lines, watching out for subtle errors or changes - these are key skills when faced with any textual games or tasks in an escape room.

Yes, that’s the real Jim Moriarty.
If you’re yet to see the series, I’ve ruined the first season for you. Don’t look at me, I did warn you, didn’t I?

Kinda obvious, isn’t it?
The person who gains the knowledge of how to escape the room is the king, isn’t he?
